Before the Storm:

  • Be sure and turn off the power (circuit breaker) to the pool equipment.
  • Remove all electronic components of the pool/spa equipment (i.e., pumps, heater or salt generation components) and store them indoors in a dry place to prevent damage due to flooding. If this is not possible, seal the components in plastic material and secure tightly with tape to make it as water tight as possible.
  • Cover the pool with a safety cover that allows water to flow through the cover. This will ensure that no debris will enter the pool but allow the water to pass through and prevent the cover from submersing into the pool.
  • Do not drain or empty the pool! Filling the pool to capacity is actually a better solution. Water in the pool will act as a shield, protecting it from the damaging effects of flying debris. Draining the pool may cause serious structural problems and can even cause the pool to pop out of the ground!
  • Double shock the pool at a rate of 2lbs per 10,000 gallons (after the sun has set) to prevent contamination.
  • Add Algaecide 60 at a rate of 17oz per 10,000 gallons.
  • Remove all loose items from the pool area like furniture, pool cleaning equipment, and pool toys. Place those items in the house or nearby safe location. Never put patio furniture or other objects in the bottom of your pool. These items can move during the storm and scratch or tear the surface of the pool. Store all items in a safe place and not in the pool.

After the Storm:

  • Remove the cover immediately after the storm and remove any debris that may have blown into the pool with a pole and net. Ensure that the skimmers are clean and there is no debris piled up around the main drain.
  • Reinstall the pool’s electronic equipment and/or remove the plastic material, check for any flood damage and ensure all components are dry.
  • Turn the power back on to the pool and return the water level (by draining, not backwashing) to normal for proper skimming action.
  • Double shock the pool at a rate of 2lbs per 10,000 gallons (after the sun has set) and run the filter 24/7 until the water is clean and clear.
  • Clean the pool thoroughly by normal cleaning methods.
  • Prior to entering the pool, take a water sample to The Backyard Outlet in Fort Walton Beach for a professional water analysis to ensure that your pool is safe for swimming!
